Alstom strengthens Kanpur Metro with Indian-made trainsets

Alstom has upgraded Kanpur Metro’s Corridor I with new India-made trainsets and improved signalling systems, increasing urban mobility and extending the network’s reach to 16 kilometres.

Alstom has expanded the Kanpur Metro by supplying India-made trainsets and modern signalling equipment, hence increasing Corridor I’s reach and efficiency. This development adds five subterranean stations to the corridor, bringing the total number of stations to 14 and extending it to nearly 16 km.

Alstom’s contribution consists of 201 metro cars (67 three-car trainsets) and the CITYFLO 650 signalling system for the Agra-Kanpur metro project. The trains were conceived in Hyderabad, signalling was created in Gurugram and Bangkok, and manufacturing took place at Alstom’s Savli facility in Gujarat as part of the ‘Make in India’ project.

For safe and effective operations, each train has sophisticated communication-based train control (CBTC) systems and can carry up to 960 passengers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the additional services, emphasising the metro’s role in improving Kanpur’s connections and infrastructure. This extension is a significant step towards improving urban mobility and is consistent with national objectives supporting sustainable and efficient transportation options.
