Assam enhances connectivity with a ₹320 crore bus terminal in Sribhumi

The planned ISBT at Sribhumi is a significant milestone in Assam’s infrastructure development, with the goal of streamlining interstate travel and promoting economic growth.
The Assam government has announced the development of a cutting-edge Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Sribhumi, formerly known as Karimganj, as a substantial upgrade to the state’s transportation infrastructure. The 320 crore project aims to improve regional connectivity and public transit in southern Assam.
The proposed ISBT in Sribhumi is expected to serve as an important transit hub for both intra- and inter-state travel, increasing passenger convenience and reducing traffic congestion. This facility will have modern passenger amenities, parking spaces, logistics support, and easy access to national and state highways. Officials hope that the terminal will improve transportation networks, create jobs and encourage local economic development.
This relocation is part of a larger regional development strategy. During the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, the state inked MoUs worth over ₹121 crore with investors for projects in areas including aerated beverages, tile manufacturing, and fisheries. This effort for industrial and infrastructure development seeks to establish Sribhumi as a growing economic zone in southern Assam.
The renaming of Karimganj to Sribhumi is part of a cultural resurgence spurred by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s references to the region. The administration hopes to strike a balance between history and growth by linking historical identity to modern progress.
The ISBT and the recently signed MoUs represent a watershed moment for Sribhumi. The district, with its strategic location and growing infrastructure, is well-positioned to contribute significantly to Assam’s vision of inclusive and sustainable development.
