Bengaluru gets a boost with tunnel road and ₹4,000 Cr waste management plan

Karnataka has upgraded infrastructure in Bengaluru, including a 114-km elevated corridor and tunnel network and a ₹4,000 crore ‘Swachha Bengaluru’ project to restructure waste management over 33 zones.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar has launched a 114-kilometre elevated corridor network to alleviate traffic congestion in Bengaluru. This comes one day after the State Cabinet approved the long-awaited tunnel road project.

Traffic police opinions have been sought, and tenders for Phase 1 of the tunnel project will be issued shortly. Concerned about probable congestion at tunnel entry and exit points, he specified that no exit points would be permitted within a one-kilometre radius of Vidhana Soudha to prevent gridlock. The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and the police are currently in discussions to fine-tune the idea.

In addition, a ₹ 4,000 crore plan under the ‘Swachha Bengaluru’ project was revealed to improve the city’s waste management. Bengaluru would be separated into 33 separate waste zones, each associated with a significant constituency or ward. The strategy calls for a seven-year operational tender and a one-time citywide garbage and rubbish cleaning program. The coordinated effort seeks to make Bengaluru cleaner and more efficient.
