Bengaluru proposes new terminals at Devanahalli and Nelamangala

Union Minister V. Somanna recommends Devanahalli and Nelamangala terminals to relieve congestion, improve Bengaluru’s infrastructure, and increase connectivity.

Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna proposed two additional railway terminals in Bengaluru: Devanahalli and Nelamangala. Bengaluru currently has three major railway terminals: KSR Bengaluru City, Yeswantpur, and the Sir MV Terminal. South Western Railway (SWR) is already developing a massive coach terminal at Devanahalli, near Kempegowda International Airport. Somanna has proposed a terminal in Nelamangala, near Tumakuru, his constituency, citing the need to relieve congestion at Bengaluru’s current stations.

“We require more railway terminals in a city like Bengaluru, which draws people from across the country for work,” he says. “Due to insufficient land availability towards the Whitefield side, our focus is on developing terminals in Devanahalli and Nelamangala, each requiring at least 400 acres.” Railway officials selected property near Devanahalli’s Venkatagiri Kote Halt station as the location for the proposed mega terminal. The terminal is expected to have 16 platforms, 20 stabling lines, 10 pit lines, and other amenities.

Somanna additionally disclosed plans to build two extra platforms at KSR Bengaluru City station at a cost of ₹180 crore. He states that when the reconstruction of Bengaluru Cantonment and Yeswantpur stations is complete, they will have world-class facilities. Furthermore, he states that the redevelopment of KSR Bengaluru City railway station is being carried out under the PPP model at a cost of ₹ 1200 crore. “A circular railway project spanning 280 km around Bengaluru is in the planning stages to mitigate congestion,” the politician claimed. Somanna stated that steps would be taken to rename Bellandur Road railway station to Panthur.

He states that the Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (K-RIDE) and SWR are dedicated to addressing problems in the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP). Somanna says that two suburban rail corridors—Benniganahalli to Chikkabanavara (25 km) and Heelalige to Rajanukunte (46.8 km)—would be finished by March 2027. The project, which was originally scheduled to be completed within 72 months of being approved in October 2020, got its foundation stone from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2022. Modi had promised that the project, which had been stalled for 40 years, would be completed within 40 months.

He noted that the doubling of the Hosur-Salem line via Yeswantpur and the Byappanahalli-Hosur line is anticipated to be completed by August 2025. “The section from Bengaluru Cantonment to Whitefield is set to be quadrupled by June 2025.” K-RIDE has commissioned one vent of the Panathur Railway Underpass (RUB), with the second slated to open in January 2025.”

Somanna highlighted issues such as rainwater drainage and emphasised the importance of infrastructure improvements, such as Rail Over Bridges (ROBs), Rail Under Bridges (RUBs), underpasses, and water vents, to improve traffic flow and management. “The railways will bear 100 percent of the cost for ROB works to expedite completion instead of the earlier 50:50 cost-sharing arrangement with state governments,” the official adds.
