Mumbai’s civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) completed the tunnelling in MCGM Water Tunnel Project in record time. The project was awarded to Patel Engineering Limited, which includes the construction of a 5.5km tunnel between Hedgewar Udhyan and Trombay, as well as allied works to improve Greater Mumbai’s water supply system, was awarded to one of the major Infrastructure and Construction services companies in India, Patel Engineering Ltd.
M/s Patel Engineering Ltd. (PEL) constructed the tunnel with a 3.2 diameter open type tunnel boring machine (TBM). The Tunnel passes beneath the city with an overburden cover of approximately 100m and being with a smaller diameter of 3.2 is harder to execute. PEL started digging the tunnel last year, and has completed 3km of tunnelling out of a total of 5.5km. in January 2022.Adding yet another feather to BMC’s cap, Patel Engineering Ltd. (PEL) achieved the fastest tunnel boring of 600 metres by TBM. This is a tunnel boring record using a Tunnel Boring Machine segment of 3.2m dia. tunnel in Mumbai below 100m ground level.
