Cabinet approves construction of a new 4.56 km road and bridge projects in Bihar

The Union Cabinet approves a ₹3,064.45 crore project to construct a 4.56 km six-lane bridge over the Ganga between Digha and Sonepur in Bihar. Parallel to the existing railroad bridge, it will improve communication between Patna and Saran while also reducing traffic congestion in north Bihar.

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) approved infrastructure projects worth ₹5,860 crore to enhance road and bridge connectivity in Bihar. Key projects include the four-laning of a 2.056-kilometre stretch of NH-322 between Mathurapur and Mukhtapur ROB, as well as the construction of a new 200-metre-high RCC bridge over the Budhi Gandak River in Samastipur. The bridge will replace the broken screw pile bridge at Magardih Ghat, reducing traffic congestion and improving communication between Samastipur and Darbhanga.

The Union Budget 2024-25 allocates ₹26,000 crore for road construction in Bihar, which includes these projects. Multilateral development agencies are anticipated to help fund the project.

The Centre has approved a ₹33,464 crore road construction plan for Bihar in FY 2025-26. This includes over 50 projects spanning 526 kilometres of highways, upgrading 227 kilometres of roads to two-lane paved shoulder standards, and building new bridges, underpasses, and railway overbridges to increase traffic flow and regional accessibility.

This sustained investment demonstrates the central government’s efforts to reshape Bihar’s infrastructure environment, fostering easier travel, economic growth, and a higher quality of life for its citizens.
