CM Fadnavis inaugurates Coastal Road connector to BWSL

The Coastal Road-BWSL link in Mumbai offers a 10-minute trip from Bandra to Marine Drive, officially launched by Chief Minister Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Shinde.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the northbound carriage of the bow-string bridge, which connects the Mumbai Coastal Road to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). Coastal Road will be open for vehicular travel from 7 a.m. until 12 a.m. This will shorten the travel time between Bandra and Marine Drive. The revised route means the journey will take just 10 minutes. Thousands of Mumbaikars will benefit from a speedier and more efficient commute. In addition to the CM and Dy CM, Minister for Information and Technology Ashish Shelar and Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Mangal Prabhat Lodha attended the ceremony.

“The permissions for the project were secured during the first term of the Mahayuti government, with most of the construction work beginning in the second term. Currently, around 95 percent of the project has been completed, and the remaining work will be finished during the current tenure of the Mahayuti government,” says Fadnavis. “Credit is not something one asks for – Mumbaikars have seen who truly completed the project,” he added, taking a dig at Maha Vikas Aghadi without naming it.

The bridge connecting the Coastal Road to the BWSL is 827 metres long, 699 metres of which are above the water. The approach road measures 128 metres in length. This bridge’s main feature is its set of bow arch string girders, which weigh 2,400 tonnes. Each girder measures 143 metres long, 27 metres broad, and 31 metres high.

The Coastal Road stretches 10.58 km from the Princess Street Flyover on Marine Drive to the Worli end of the Sea Link. The last stretch of the Coastal Road, which includes a 7.5-kilometre continuous promenade from Priyadarshini Park in Breach Candy to the Worli end of the Sea Link, is projected to be completed by May of this year. In addition, three interchanges (two in Worli and one in Haji Ali), median development, and parking spaces are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2025. A senior city official estimated that work on 70 hectares of open space would take another two years.

The Coastal Road project is scheduled to open in segments starting March 2024. The connector connecting the Coastal Road to the Sea Link was inaugurated on September 12, 2024, and opened for traffic the next day. The enormous project began in October 2018 at a total cost of ₹ 13,983 crore. The road has decreased travel time by 70 percent and fuel usage by 34 percent, according to BMC.
