Greenlab Diamond Factory Building

Greenlab Diamond Factory Building

Greenlab Diamond Factory is the first-of-its-kind, lab-grown diamond manufacturing facility, a pioneering venture in the heart of India at Surat. The first phase of the project, spanning 95,000 sq.ft, comprises four thoughtfully designed stories with production areas and office spaces integrated efficiently. The factory boasts a captivating facade featuring exposed RCC slabs, brick cladding, and a harmonious blend of greenery, moving away from conventional industrial aesthetics.

Project description

Background
The industrial environment was earlier designed as an enclosed space to maximise production. This posed significant drawbacks in terms of employee well-being. The lack of natural ventilation and breathing space negatively impacted workers’ health and productivity. Additionally, the services vital for the efficient functioning of an industrial facility like that of a diamond factory were inadequate.

Greenlab’s design principle
We proposed a more efficient and human-centred layout for addressing these issues. The factory plan comprises rectangular blocks optimised for production with curved walls in areas designated for executive functions and employee breathing spaces. This proposition was to break the monotony of the traditional layout and create a more pleasant and comfortable environment for workers, which, in turn, would enhance both their well-being and productivity.

While the rear section was designed to host a state-of-the-art production area, the front elevation of the building was designed to house modern and inviting office spaces, creating a distinctive contrast. The meticulous landscaping across the entire structure is aimed to create an ambience that transcends the traditional industrial atmosphere.

The project’s first phase, with the core production facilities and office spaces, showcases our visionary approach to sustainable and aesthetically pleasing industrial architecture. The second phase of the factory is spread over an impressive 78,000 sq.ft, dedicated to the diamond processing unit. This section features a triple-height foyer enhanced by a hanging observatory bridge. Wedge-shaped skylights accentuate the grandeur of the arrival area.

We planned to use an unconventional design strategy for the front façade. The façade is adorned with brick cladding and exposed RCC slabs, a testament to the harmonious fusion of functionality and aesthetics. The second phase introduces a breathtaking triple-height foyer, creating an awe-inspiring entrance. The hanging observatory bridge further adds a touch of architectural brilliance.

In line with its name, the project promotes extensive greenery within and surrounding the building. The lush landscaping contributes to a visually pleasing environment and aligns with Greenlab’s commitment to sustainability. The landscaped space between the two buildings, featuring a library and sit-out pavilion, is intended to serve as a communal space. This area provides a serene retreat for employees and visitors, fostering community and intellectual engagement.

This project sets the stage for a new era in producing lab-grown and natural diamonds, exemplifying the harmonious coexistence of functionality and elegance.

Architect Speaks

How has Greenlab’s design philosophy made it a trendsetter of sustainable industrial facilities?
Greenlab Diamond Factory is revolutionising diamond manufacturing in India with its cutting-edge design and forward-thinking approach. The facility combines innovation and sustainability, creating a space reflecting the company’s ambition to lead the diamond industry in technological advancements and aesthetic appeal. By integrating state-of-the-art amenities and prioritising environmental responsibility, the factory sets a new benchmark for producing lab-grown and processing natural diamonds. This landmark project marks the dawn of a new era of industrial buildings, where functionality and elegance coexist perfectly.

What were the major structural challenges?
Site-related challenge: The site’s soil conditions were poor, and the water table level was high, which resulted in waterlogging.

Design challenge: To create a column-free atrium space, a suspended bridge had to be incorporated for circulation on the upper floors. This posed a structural challenge due to the long span required in the centre of the 15 mx45 m triple-height atrium.

What outstanding aspects do you think got the project shortlisted for the award?
The project’s unique design elements, such as the exposed RCC slabs, brick cladding, and the harmonious blend of greenery both within and outside the structure, asserting its commitment to sustainability, were the outstanding aspects that made the project a strong contender for the award.
