Gyaros Island Design contest opens for Indian architects

For ArXellence 3, Indian architects are encouraged to create environmentally friendly plans for a museum and research centre located on Gyaros Island.

Indian architects are invited to take part in ArXellence 3 by Alumil India, the fully-owned Indian subsidiary of Alumil Group, one of the world leaders in the design and production of premium architectural aluminium systems. The Technical Chamber of Greece has endorsed the worldwide competition, which is being organised by Alumil and AEGEAS. Its theme is “Preservation of Historical Memory & Promotion and Protection of the Special Environmental Characteristics of Gyaros Island.”

Once a place of political exile, Gyaros Island is now important ecologically since it is home to the greatest colony of monk seals in the Mediterranean. In order to win the competition, a museum honouring those who perished on the island and a research facility promoting Mediterranean environmental conservation tactics must be established.

“ArXellence encourages dialogue on environmentally friendly building and design. Theodoros Axouristos, Managing Director of Alumil India, adds, “We invite Indian architects to create a self-sufficient hub on Gyaros Island, addressing biodiversity in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

Notable architects like Sanjay Puri from India are on the competition jury. First place receives €40,000, second place receives €20,000, third place receives €10,000, and there are six honourable mentions.
“It is essential to reduce carbon emissions while promoting environmental sustainability. The world would be a better place if every business took on projects like these, according to Ar. Sanjay Puri.

There are two key prerequisites for the tournament. First, a museum will be built to honour individuals who perished on Gyaros after going through all of these horrendous experiences, including those who were tortured, imprisoned, and suffering on the island. The second relates to the establishment of a research centre that will serve as a platform for promoting sustainability and environmental protection measures in the larger Mediterranean region.
