Kolkata Metro Line 3 tunnelling gears up with TBM clearing FATs

Kolkata Metro Line-3’s underground tunnel construction is all set to gear up with L&T deploying advanced TBMs for the Joka-Esplanade route.

The construction of Kolkata Metro Line-3 (Purple Line), which will connect Joka to Esplanade, is progressing at a rapid pace with key developments in its underground tunnel construction. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been awarded the ₹ 2447 crore civil construction contract for the 5.05 km underground package (UG1) that spans from Mominpur to Esplanade.

This section of Line-3 will feature twin tunnels with four underground stations—Kidderpore, Victoria Memorial, Park Street, and Esplanade. The Esplanade station is set to become a major interchange hub, linking the Purple Line with the Blue Line (Line-1) and Green Line (Line-2). This expansion marks a significant milestone in the city’s metro development and urban infrastructure.

L&T commenced work on the project in May 2024, with construction starting from the Victoria Memorial Station site. As part of the tunnel construction, L&T is deploying two Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to create the twin tunnels. These tunnels will have an inner diameter of 5.8 meters, with an estimated 4,000 tunnel ring segments to be cast in the Sarkarpool neighbourhood of Maheshtala.

The 5.05 km underground stretch will use both the cut-and-cover method and TBM tunnelling, with approximately 500 meters between Esplanade and Park Street being built using the cut-and-cover technique. The tunnel work is progressing smoothly, driven by the increasing demand for efficient public transportation in Kolkata, and will eventually serve as an integral part of the city’s metro network.

Kolkata Metro Line-3, with its advanced tunnel construction techniques and strategic positioning, is set to revolutionise the city’s connectivity, making commuting faster and more convenient for residents. As the project advances, it will bring a transformative impact on Kolkata’s transport infrastructure, enhancing the city’s urban mobility for years to come.
