MMRDA to build Mumbai’s largest Metro Depot in Thane

MMRDA has acquired 430 acres in Mogarpada, Thane, to build the city’s largest integrated metro depot, marking a significant step towards upgrading Mumbai’s metro infrastructure.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) acquired approximately 430 acres of land in Mogarpada, Thane, for the construction of the city’s largest integrated metro depot. This depot, which is strategically placed along Ghodbunder Road, will play an important role in integrating operations for several metro lines, including Metro Lines 4, 4A, 10, and 11. The site is meant to accommodate train stabling yards, workshops, inspection bays, an operations control centre, administrative facilities, and staff housing, allowing for continuous maintenance and efficient management of metro services throughout the region.
Despite the completion of legal land acquisition, the MMRDA has faced challenges in physically taking possession of certain plots due to disagreements with a few local farmers who still live on the property. Given these issues, the Maharashtra state government has launched eviction proceedings to ensure the project’s early completion. Once operational, this integrated metro depot will greatly increase transit capacity and improve service coordination throughout Mumbai’s developing metro network.
The project is an important component of MMRDA’s long-term plan to improve urban mobility, cut travel time, and meet the growing demand for dependable and efficient public transit in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
