Namma Metro Yellow Line is set to launch in August

The Yellow Line in Bengaluru, which promises quicker, autonomous connection throughout the southern corridor of the city, is scheduled to open in August.

Bengaluru’s much-anticipated Namma Metro Yellow Line is finally set to open in August 2025. This 19-kilometre route, which connects Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road to Bommasandra, promises to improve connectivity throughout the city’s southern corridor. The new route would connect critical regions such as Jayadeva Hospital, Silk Board, and Electronics City, a major IT hub, reducing traffic congestion and improving commuting times for thousands of inhabitants.

The Yellow Line has 16 stops, including India’s tallest metro station, Jayadeva Hospital, which stands at an astonishing 39 meters. This route will also act as an interchange for the forthcoming Pink route, significantly connecting the city’s transit network. Initially, three driverless trainsets will run at 30-minute intervals, with service frequency likely to increase as more trains arrive. Titagarh Rail Systems plans to deliver its fourth autonomous trainset in July, followed by two more trainsets every month beginning in August.

Despite many delays owing to bogie shortages, technical faults in the Siemens CBTC signalling system, and safety clearance issues, the project appears to be back on schedule. The final safety approvals, which include an Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) and a Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspection, are scheduled to be completed after mid-July. According to BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwar Rao, the company is “very, very confident” about launching the line by August.

Once operational, the Yellow Line is estimated to treble the metro’s present daily ridership of approximately 7.5 lakh passengers. With its sophisticated autonomous technology and strategic routing, the line is ready to provide significant respite to commuters in southern Bengaluru and set a new standard for India’s urban transit networks.
