NMDC appoints Amitava Mukherjee as Chairman & CMD

Shri Amitava Mukherjee takes over as Chairman & Managing Director of NMDC, presenting innovative leadership and ambitious growth plans for India’s mining sector.
Shri Amitava Mukherjee has taken over as NMDC’s Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) effective March 6, 2025. Shri Mukherjee, a seasoned officer from the 1996 batch of the Indian Railway Accounts Services (IRAS), has previously served in several positions for the Government of India before becoming the apex leader of NMDC. Shri Mukherjee, CMD (Additional Charge) of NMDC since March 2023 and Director (Finance) from November 2018, has guided the organisation with imaginative leadership. He also serves as Chairman of NMDC Steel Limited and Legacy Iron Ore Limited.
Under his leadership, NMDC became the first iron ore mining business in India to produce more than 45 million metric tonnes in FY24. He has led NMDC to its highest-ever turnover and net worth, implemented cutting-edge digital and technical infrastructure, and restored operations at the country’s only mechanised diamond mine.
He was instrumental in commissioning the NMDC Steel Plant, which is currently a source of pride for Bastar. Led by him, the business has made breakthroughs into gold mining in Australia and put out a bold international expansion strategy to become a global mining giant.
Shri Mukherjee has played an important role in implementing major investment initiatives, improving financial discipline, and steering NMDC towards a future of ethical mining. With him at the leadership, the Navratna firm is aiming for an ambitious objective of 100 million metric tonnes of mining capacity by 2030.
This appointment demonstrates his influence and impact on India’s industrial and economic environment as a prominent person in the mining sector with dynamic experience and steely ambitions.
