PM Modi announces major development initiatives in Kanpur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched major infrastructure projects in Kanpur, including more robust urban transport, energy systems, and contemporary industrial connectivity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently laid the groundwork for 15 important development projects in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, worth over ₹47,600 crore. These projects, spanning critical sectors such as urban transit, energy, defence, and municipal infrastructure, aim to convert Kanpur into a modern industrial and logistical hub. The large-scale efforts demonstrate the government’s commitment to strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s economic foundation and promoting long-term regional growth.
The visit’s main feature was the opening of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project’s underground portion. The new route connects Chunniganj and Kanpur Central, with five subterranean stations: Chunniganj, Bada Chauraha, Naveen Market, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central. This 16-kilometre metro corridor has modern amenities like CCTV security, platform screen doors, and accessible features for those with disabilities. It also features art installations that reflect Kanpur’s industrial background, promoting cultural and sustainable urban development.
In the energy sector, PM Modi dedicated the 660-MW Panki Thermal Power Extension Project and three 660-MW units at the Ghatampur Thermal Power Station. These additions will boost Uttar Pradesh’s power capacity by roughly 3,081 MW, or 24.89 percent. The projects use supercritical technology to increase fuel economy and lower pollution. He also laid the groundwork for several substations and a 40 MLD sewage treatment plant in Bingawan, emphasising sustainable energy and water use.
The Prime Minister also prioritised defence infrastructure, commencing the widening and strengthening of the road connecting Narwal Mode on the Prayagraj Highway to the Kanpur Defence Node. This facility is part of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, which has nodes at Aligarh, Agra, Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Kanpur, and Lucknow. The corridor is intended to boost the indigenous industry and establish Uttar Pradesh as a leader in defence manufacturing.
While the government’s efforts were widely praised, political discussion erupted. Akhilesh Yadav, leader of the Samajwadi Party, accused the BJP-led government of renaming projects launched during his tenure, including the Kanpur Metro and Panki Power Plant. Despite these charges, the general public has responded positively, particularly to the metro development, which promises to reduce traffic congestion and improve everyday commutes for Kanpur residents.
Together, these initiatives highlight a strategic push to improve Kanpur’s infrastructure, mobility, and industrial capacity. The diverse projects are projected to greatly boost Uttar Pradesh’s economic resilience and align with the larger national aims of infrastructure modernisation and self-reliance.
