The Union Cabinet has approved Pune Metro’s Phase 2 extension, enhancing connectivity with two elevated corridors and 13 new stations.

The Union Cabinet approved the Phase 2 extension of the Pune Metro project, totalling ₹3,626.24 crore. This measure will considerably improve urban transportation in critical regions throughout the city. The Phase 2 extension features two additional elevated metro corridors: Corridor 2A, which connects Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, and Corridor 2B, which connects Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi. The extension, which spans around 12.75 kilometres, will add 13 new stations to the current Vanaz-Ramwadi route developed in Phase 1. The goal is to relieve congestion on important arterial routes such as Paud Road and Nagar Road while providing a faster, safer, and more environmentally responsible commuting option.

This phase is expected to be completed in four years, by the middle of 2029, and to serve almost 3.5 lakh passengers per day by 2057. The metro line would serve Pune’s rapidly expanding western and eastern suburbs, connecting key IT hubs, educational institutions, and commercial districts such as Kothrud, Bavdhan, Kharadi, and Wagholi. Maha-Metro will manage implementation, including financing from the Central Government, the Maharashtra State Government, and other financial organisations. Preliminary work, including topographic surveys and station design, is currently underway. The extension will also enable multimodal integration with city bus routes and intercity transportation networks, particularly at nodal stations such as Chandni Chowk and Wagholi.

This latest certification represents a significant milestone in Pune’s evolving metro network. Along with continuing Phase 1 works and the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro Line 3, the Phase 2 extension demonstrates the city’s sustained commitment to sustainable and accessible public transport. With expanded accessibility and comfort, the metro is poised to become a lifeline for Pune’s urban commuters.
