Samruddhi Mahamarg project completed with final stretch inauguration

The Samruddhi Mahamarg’s final phase was opened, marking the completion of the highway project that connects Mumbai and Nagpur in under eight hours.

The Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, Maharashtra’s major infrastructure project, has been completed with the inauguration of its final 76-kilometre length from Igatpuri in Nashik to Amane near Bhiwandi in Thane district. On June 5, 2025, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, opened the final stretch of the 701-kilometre motorway, marking a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure development.

With this completion, the journey time between Mumbai and Nagpur has been reduced by half, from almost 16 hours to approximately 8 hours. The motorway, which connects ten districts and around 390 communities, is planned for high-speed travel with a maximum speed of 150 km/h. It is expected to considerably improve regional connections and increase economic activity throughout Maharashtra.

The recently opened road has some of the most stunning technical feats, including India’s longest highway tunnel, a 7.8-kilometre passage that cuts through the Kasara Ghat. This tunnel addresses past issues provided by mountainous terrain, significantly improving safety and lowering trip stress. Key interchanges at Igatpuri, Kutghar (Shahapur), and Amane facilitate smooth transitions between connecting routes and districts.

The Mahamarg’s final segment, built at an estimated cost of ₹1,182 crore, is expected to change logistics, tourism, agriculture, and industry. It is projected to open up new economic prospects by boosting freight movement, encouraging investment, and connecting rural and urban areas.

While the motorway is now completely operational, several regions of Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai continue to have limited access due to continuing construction at the Vadpe interchange. Officials have indicated that complete access is planned within the next year, which would improve connection for commuters from these regions.

The completion of the Samruddhi Mahamarg is being celebrated as a watershed moment in Maharashtra’s infrastructure development, representing the state’s dedication to progress and its aim for rapid, sustainable growth.
