Shaktipeeth expressway to connect Maharashtra’s sacred and rural lands

The Maharashtra government has sanctioned ₹20,787 crore for the Shaktipeeth Expressway, set to enhance travel across 12 districts and key pilgrimage sites.

Maharashtra’s state government has sanctioned 20,787 crore for the creation of the Shaktipeeth Motorway, which will connect holy and distant places from Nagpur to the Goa border. This 802-kilometre, six-lane access-controlled motorway will connect Pavnar in Wardha to Patradevi in Sindhudurg, traversing 12 districts and cutting travel time from 18-20 hours to 7-8 hours.

The expressway is named after the sacred “shaktipeeths” it connects, providing devotees with direct access to revered pilgrimage sites such as Tuljapur, Mahur, Kolhapur, Pandharpur, Parli Vaijnath, Aundha Nagnath, Akkalkot, and others. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is implementing the project, which is intended to improve not only spiritual tourism but also regional trade and infrastructure.

The state is obtaining a loan of ₹12,000 crore from HUDCO to support the acquisition of around 7,500 hectares. Land measurement processes are underway, with a December 2025 deadline for purchase and a 2028-29 completion schedule for the entire corridor.

However, the ambitious proposal faces opposition. Farmers in districts like Kolhapur, Sangli, and Beed have expressed worry over displacement and a lack of engagement. Local groups have organised a rasta-roko rally on June 27 to demand greater transparency and fair recompense.

Quoting a senior MSRDC official, “We are committed to balancing progress with people’s rights. Dialogues with stakeholders will ensure the Shaktipeeth Expressway becomes a symbol of inclusive development.”
