Sterling & Wilson secures 1,000 MWhr BESS project in India
A significant contract is awarded to Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited for the largest 1,000 MWhr battery energy storage system in Rajasthan, India.
Leading domestic renewable energy project construction and engineering company Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited (SWREL; BSE Scrip Code: 542760; NSE Symbol: SWSOLAR) is pleased to announce that it is being awarded a prestigious order for the engineering, design, procurement, erection, testing, and commissioning of a 500 x 2 (1,000 MWhr) standalone BESS plant in Rajasthan, India.
This GWhr-scale project, which will be completed by 2025, is currently India’s largest battery energy storage (BESS) project and one of the few GWhr-scale projects in a single place worldwide.
As of March 2024, India’s entire installed capacity for BESS is a mere 219 MWhr. The Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) National Electricity Plan (NEP) 2023 projects that in 2026–2027, the required energy storage capacity will be 82.37 GWh (47.65 GWh from PSP and 34.72 GWh from BESS). As a result of this order, SWREL will take the lead in the rapidly expanding BESS market in India.
The exact same customer additionally provided the business a 20 MW floating solar project in Karnataka, making it the third such project the company is now working on in the nation.
