Tunnel T-3 of the Khurda-Balangir Rail Line is completed successfully

The East Coast Railway completed Tunnel T-3, a significant milestone in the Khurda-Balangir rail project, which enhanced Odisha’s infrastructure.

The East Coast Railway verified that the 2.6-kilometre-long Tunnel T-3 between Buguda and Banigochha in Odisha’s Nayagarh district was completed, marking a critical milestone for the Khurda Road-Balangir New Rail Line project. This accomplishment highlights the progress of one of the region’s most complex infrastructure projects.

Tunnel T-3, excavated using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), has a 2-degree curve and marks a significant milestone in the project’s timeframe. The breakthrough, known as “daylighting,” was completed on January 13, marking the end of months of precise engineering and rigorous preparation.

According to the East Coast Railway, Tunnel T-3 is the longest tunnel in Nayagarh district and the second longest in the Khurda Road-Balangir rail project. Advanced technology and equipment were used to traverse the difficult terrain of the Eastern Ghats, exhibiting engineering excellence. The Railway Ministry stressed the significance of this achievement in improving connectivity throughout Odisha.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised the accomplishment, saying, “A milestone showcasing engineering excellence in challenging terrains: A breakthrough has been achieved in the 2.6 km-long Tunnel T3 (with a 2-degree curve) between Buguda and Baniguchha stations on the Khurda-Balangir section in Odisha.”

The enormous 301-kilometre Khurda Road-Balangir train project includes seven tunnels along a 75-kilometre length from Daspalla to Purunakatak. The longest tunnel, T-7, which spans 4.85 kilometres, is already built. Tunnelling through the mountainous Eastern Ghats has been one of the most difficult problems for the project’s engineers.

To present, 215 kilometres of rail lines have been constructed. This covers 105.8 km from Khurda Road to Daspalla and 109 km from Balangir to Purunakatak. Construction on the remaining portions, including the vital stretch from Purunakatak to Adhenigarh, is now underway and scheduled to be completed in the next few months.

Once fully operational, the Khurda Road-Balangir rail line will greatly improve connectivity between Bhubaneswar and Balangir, cutting travel time and supporting regional economic growth. This project intends to improve transportation, facilitate trade, and contribute to Odisha’s socioeconomic growth. The new achievement is a significant step towards achieving these objectives, bringing the project closer to completion.
