World Architecture Festival 2024 awards showcase outstanding architectural designs
The 2024 World Architecture Festival recognises groundbreaking architectural designs, with Day Two awards including noteworthy projects from Australia, the United Kingdom, and beyond.
The second round of award winners for the 2024 World Architecture Festival has been announced, following Day Two of live presentations at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, which featured hundreds of shortlisted designs presented by practices from all over the world. Day two’s category prize winners in the world’s largest international live-judged architectural event include RSHP, Woods Bagot, tHE gRID Architects, and SAOTA. Australia led the way, with seven projects named winners and highly commended across all categories. Following Australia, the United Kingdom won four awards and received strong praise for its efforts.

• Health: Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre in Australia by Lyons
• Higher Education & Research: Waimarie – Lincoln University Science Facility in New Zealand by Warren and Mahoney in association with Lab-Works
UCL East, Marshgate in the United Kingdom by Stanton Williams and The Pā in New Zealand by Architectus, Jasmax and DesignTribe in Association were both highly commended.

• Hotel & Leisure supported by GROHE: TAWA Refugio in Chile by CONTEXTO Fushi in Japan by Tezuka Architects and Artyzen Singapore in Singapore by ONG&ONG were both highly commended.
• Mixed-Use: 88 Walker in Australia by fitzpatrick+partners Clerys Quarter in Ireland by Henry J Lyons was highly commended.
• Retrofit: Rhodes House Transformation in the United Kingdom by Stanton Williams THE HOUSE WITH SIX SWANS in Latvia by Zaigas Gailes birojs Ltd.
• Shopping: Newson’s Yard in the United Kingdom by Stiff+Trevillion
• Transport: Metropolitan Bus Station in Poland by Tremend Woven Passage to Cloudy Peaks in China by line+ studio was highly commended. Judges of today’s Completed Buildings categories noted the: “innovative solutions to challenging site densities” as well as “Substantial and complex transformations of highly significant heritage buildings” and felt many of the projects delivered “subtle yet tasteful choice of materials, texture and tones”.

• Commercial Mixed-Use: Shoupé mixed-use project in Iran by KanLan Studio Unity Arena in Norway by Rodeo Architects and Salata Business Park in Qatar by Trust Engineering consultancy were both highly commended.
• Culture: Creative Cluster in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia by IND`
Yumuktepe Archaeological Site Covering in Turkey by EAA-Emre Arolat Architecture was highly commended.
• Education: University of Tasmania Forestry Building in Australia by Woods Bagot University Technology of Sydney – National First Nations College in Australia by Warren and Mahoney in association with Greenaway Architects, OCULUS and Finding Infinity was highly commended.
• Experimental: AGRITECTURE in India by tHE gRID Architects
• Health: Tatamá Hospital in Columbia by aRE Arquitectura en estudio, OPUS diseño arquitectura paisaje, ABALARK New Footscray Hospital in Australia by Cox Architecture + Billard Leece Partnership was highly commended.

• House: Meru in Kenya by SAOTA
• Residential: Regent’s View Bethnal Green in the United Kingdom by RSHP Judges of today’s Future Projects categories were impressed with the: “rigorous research backing design processes”, and shortlisted concepts that aimed for “expansion of public spaces and inclusion of communities”.
Public Buildings: Embassy of Australia, Washington D.C. in the United States by Bates Smart Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra Hall in Lithuania by MAMA architects was highly commended.
• Bars & Restaurants: Pang Mei Noodle Bar LFS in China by Office A10
• Education: WSU Bankstown City Campus in Australia by HDR Pty Ltd Children’s Library at The Western Academy of Beijing in China by studio vapore and Midsommarkransen Elementary School in Sweden by Tengbom AB were both highly commended.
Shoupé mixed-use project by KanLan Studio
• Residential: twentyfour in Malta by 3DM Architecture The Back to Front House in Australia by Ian Moore Architects was highly commended.
• Retail: Fender Flagship Tokyo in Japan by Klein Dytham architecture Foodie Social at Hong Shou Fang by Linehouse and Qing Dynasty Post Office Renovation by More Design Office, both located in China, were highly commended.
• Temporary/Meanwhile Use: Backpack Housing in Hong Kong by HKU/ Superposition “Sydney Opera House: A beautiful idea” exhibition at Utzon Center Aalborg in Denmark by JAC studios was highly commended.
Day two’s Inside category winners showcased a diverse set of projects. The judges thought the ‘Retail’ project was beautifully conceived, “catching the spirit of the brand and providing unique experiences for visitors,” and appreciated the ‘Temporary/Meanwhile Use’ winner for its “clever and elegant way to solve the issue of working homelessness.”
