Sandvik Mining and Construction (SMC) appoints Simon Meester as the new president of Sandvik Mining and Construction in India. Simon’s appointment became effective first of February 2011 and he has already assumed his responsibilities in India. He will be based in SMC’s head office in Pune.

Essar Steel’s plate mill became the first primer plate producer in the country to be recognized for indigenous development of steel for building ships for the Indian Navy. Set up at a cost of approximately Rs. 2,000 crore, the plate mill has an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes.
A recent order by the Madras high court to stop handling polluting coal and iron ore from the Chennai port came as a breather to the residents living close to the port. The sad part is this decision may lead to several unemployed people in the region.
Despite claiming that 20 km of national highways will be bid out and eventually constructed every day during 2010-11, the ministry of road transport and highways has been woefully short of target. The ministry awarded 5,083 km of national highways last year, but managed to construct only 1,780.34 km. In other words, a target of 14 km a day was awarded but only 4.9 km was built in a day.

The Supreme Court recently criticised the DDA for not keeping an eye on the wide range of encroachments taking place on public land terming it as a destructive authority.
Justice V S Sirpurkar and G S Singhvi came down heavily on the DDA for overlooking several illegal encroachments of property and government land in the city.
“A comprehensive policy framework for public private partnership (PPP) in the building of physical infrastructure and social sectors such as health and education is on the anvil. The policy will lay down guidelines for the entry of private players and implementation of infrastructure projects of both the Centre and the states”, stated R Gopalan, secretary, department of economic affairs, ministry of finance.
