242 projects lagging behind schedules: Govt [May 2012]

As many as 242 large infrastructure projects, including those of roads, power and petroleum, are running behind schedule, the government data reveals. “Out of 561 projects (costing Rs. 150 crore and above) which are on the monitor of this Ministry, 242 projects are delayed as on 1st January, 2012”, the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Statistics and Programme Implementation Srikant Kumar Jena informed in a written reply in the Lok Sabha recently. “The main factors for delay include land acquisition, delay in procurement of equipment, law and order problems, inadequate infrastructure, delay in mobilization by contractors, general cost escalation due to delay, increase in prices of cement and steel and exchange rate variations”, he informed.
