JSW Steel Aug steel production up 29%

JSW Steel, belonging to the JSW group, part of the O P Jindal Group, has reported a 29 per cent jump in crude steel production at 9.85 lakh tonnes during August against 7.63 lakh tonnes in the same month last year.In August, the company produced 8.24 lakh tonnes of flat rolled products, up by 60 per cent from the corresponding period of last year. However, production of long products, used mostly in construction sector, declined 13 per cent to 1.28 lakh tonne from 1.48 lakh tonnes during August last year, a statement issued by the company said. The company took shutdown of one of its corex furnaces at its Vijayanagar plant in Karnataka for relining and capacity enhancement and is expected to recommence production this month. “The capacity utilisation at Vijayanagar works remains at around 80 per cent due to iron ore shortage caused by inordinate delays in opening category A and B mines even after Honourable Supreme Court  order in April 2013 to resume mining operations,” said the company.
