Saharanpur introduces sustainable cow dung paint

Saharanpur launches Uttar Pradesh’s first environmentally friendly paint manufactured from cow dung, providing a sustainable, cost-effective, and health-conscious alternative to traditional paints.

Saharanpur recently introduces an eco-friendly paint manufactured from cow dung, setting a new standard for sustainable innovation in Uttar Pradesh. This effort, the first of its type in the state, was started at the Govigyan Anusandhan Kendra, a local research centre dedicated to advancing cow-related products. Officials at the centre emphasised the paint’s health and environmental benefits, describing it as a safer, more sustainable alternative to standard paints, which frequently include volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other dangerous chemicals. This paint supports the greater government effort for eco-friendly practices, rural self-sufficiency, and cow conservation by utilising a natural, biodegradable resource.

The eco-friendly paint is advertised as non-toxic and odourless, in contrast to traditional paint, which has strong chemical odours and negative health impacts. In addition to its health benefits, the paint’s low cost makes it a viable alternative for both public and residential use. The designers have stated that the paint is cost-effective and reasonably priced when compared to synthetic paints, making it appropriate for a wider range of applications in schools, government offices and residences.

Officials engaged in the research emphasise that this cow dung-derived paint is particularly relevant to India’s emphasis on promoting rural economies and environmental practices. Using cow dung, a plentiful resource in rural India, this enterprise helps local farmers by providing extra money sources. Cow dung, historically utilised for manure, fuel, and even biogas generation, is now tapped  as a raw material for environmentally friendly paint, expanding its utility in ways that can benefit rural communities economically.
