Asian Paints creates colour innovation with Chromacosm

Asian Paints introduces Chromacosm, a groundbreaking architectural colour system with 5,300 hues to empower designers and architects worldwide.

Asian Paints, a global leader in paint and colour technology, is pleased to announce the launch of Asian Paints Chromacosm, the world’s largest architectural colour system. With over 5,300 distinct colours, it is poised to transform the way architects, designers, and industry professionals interact with colour.

To commemorate the launch of Chromacosm, Asian Paints has teamed with famous architect and artist Suchi Reddy, founder of the New York-based Reddymade studio, which is known for its inventive and human-centric approach to design. Reddy collaborated with Asian Paints to design and develop an art installation that captures her version of Chromacosm, an artistic investigation of the boundless cosmos of colour.

This remarkable piece consists of a succession of rods that shift from dark to vibrant colour, depicting the entire spectrum of colour. This installation, inspired by a dimensional colour study, converts colour into a physical 3D experience, allowing viewers to delve deeply into the possibilities of Chromacosm. Reddy’s installation will be launched at a press conference on December 17, 2024, and will thereafter be on exhibit for the public at the Architecture and Design Film Festival at NCPA in Mumbai from January 9 to 12, 2025. For more than a decade, Asian Paints has documented colour in India through still photography, oral narrative, and film, all through the prism of traditional crafts. From the deep indigos of Ajrakh to the powerful maroons of Kalamkari, Asian Paints has drawn inspiration from craftsmen’s outstanding work as well as the Indian people’s daily lives. This mapping and research of colour in India has contributed to the richness of our colour library, the Asian Paints Chromacosm.

Over seven decades, Asian Paints has established tremendous technical knowledge and visual acuity in the field of colour science. Recognising the industry’s need for a large but consistent colour repository, Asian Paints developed a simplified system utilising a combination of computational and visual methods, with approximately 5300 hues organised by hue and depth. One of Chromacosm’s distinguishing qualities is its ability to display all subtleties of a given colour family, from lightest to darkest in intensity and saturation. This enables designers to inspect and compare every shade within a colour family at a glance, expediting the decision-making process and guaranteeing that the final selection is completely consistent with the designer’s vision.

Chromacosm the installation: A note from the Artist, Suchi Reddy
Chromacosm is a three-dimensional colour meditation inspired by ancient tantric paintings that takes you on an exciting trip through the cosmos of hue. The installation refers to the combination of all colours, which in paint produces black and in light becomes white. The observer is allowed to travel through and around a forest of vertical reeds, encountering almost 2000 hues of colour that arise and fade back to black. Chromacosm, a salute to three-dimensional colour, was launched to honour the introduction of Asian Paints’ world’s largest paint collection.
