Chennai improves infrastructure with new ring road phase

Construction begins on a 13.3-kilometre greenfield corridor connecting Tiruvallur Bypass and Sriperumbudur, which is expected to be completed in 36 months.

In a significant boost to Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure development, work on a key segment of the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR) has begun. Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam inaugurated Phase III of the CPRR, which spans 13.3 kilometres from the Thiruvallur Bypass to Sriperumbudur.

This six-lane greenfield corridor is part of the larger CPRR project, which aims to reduce urban traffic congestion in Chennai by providing a dedicated freight and vehicle route around the city. The 13.3-kilometre stretch will greatly improve regional connectivity, particularly between Tiruvallur and the rapidly developing industrial hub of Sriperumbudur.

The Tamil Nadu Road Infrastructure Development Corporation (TNRIDC) is implementing the project, which is estimated to cost ₹1,684 crore. It consists of four major bridges, 21 minor bridges, and several culverts to ensure continuous traffic flow. Land acquisition has been completed, and the project is expected to be completed within 36 months.

Once fully operational, the CPRR is expected to reduce traffic congestion on Chennai’s arterial roads, boost economic activity, and improve goods movement to and from the Chennai, Ennore, and Kamarajar ports.
