Delhi launches new road projects to alleviate congestion

The Delhi government approved a number of road projects, including flyovers and underpasses, to improve traffic flow, connectivity, and commuter experience.

In a significant effort to improve urban mobility, the Delhi government has approved a number of major road infrastructure projects aimed at reducing traffic congestion and increasing connectivity throughout the national capital. The initiatives include the construction of flyovers, underpasses, and elevated corridors, all with the goal of decongesting high-traffic areas and providing residents with more convenient commuting options.

One of the flagship projects is the construction of a 5.5-kilometre elevated road connecting Pushta Road to Sonia Vihar. This corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time for daily commuters by providing a signal-free route through a densely populated area prone to heavy traffic congestion.

Furthermore, the government has approved the construction of a 1.3-kilometre flyover between Anand Vihar and Apsara Border, as well as a 1.6-kilometre flyover connecting Loni Road to Mandoli Junction. These elevated stretches aim to alleviate traffic bottlenecks in East Delhi, which has seen increased vehicular traffic in recent years.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has also been given approval to proceed with a proposal for an underpass at the Signature View Apartment intersection in Mukherjee Nagar. The underpass will help to relieve congestion and improve traffic flow on the busy Outer Ring Road.

Delhi’s PWD Minister, Atishi, emphasised that these infrastructure developments are consistent with the city’s overall vision for smart and sustainable urban planning. She stated that the approved projects are intended to reduce congestion and to improve road safety and fuel efficiency by reducing idle time in traffic.

Construction on these projects is expected to begin shortly after the tendering and administrative procedures are completed. Once completed, the new roadways and flyovers are expected to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce pollution in Delhi.
