DMRC completes underground tunnel for Golden Line Metro

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) completed the underground tunnel for the Golden Line, improving connectivity between the Chhatarpur Mandir and IGNOU stations.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed the underground tube for the Golden Line metro stations between Chhatarpur Mandir and IGNOU, marking another milestone in Phase IV metro extension development.
A tunnel-boring machine (TBM) of 97 meters in length was used to bore one of the deepest tunnels. The tunnel was built utilising EPBM (Earth Pressure Balancing Method) technology, which involved concrete lining of precast tunnel rings. These rings were prepared in Mundka’s automated casting yard. The steam curing method offered quick strength.
The tunnelling began in 2023 but encountered various challenges, including steep slopes and hard rocks that damaged the TBM’s screw auger. DMRC took all necessary safety precautions throughout tunnel excavation, including installing high-sensitivity devices beneath the existing viaduct and surrounding structures to prevent land collapse.
Phase IV involves the construction of approximately 40,109 kilometres of underground wires. The Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor spans 19,343 km. DMRC has been using TBMs since Phase I, and during Phase III, 30 TBMs were deployed to construct approximately 50 km of underground sections.
Parallel to the tunnel at IGNOU station, a second tunnel is being developed for downward movement. Its debut is set for March 2025. This will help to improve passenger facilities and make their journey easier.
