JSW Cement increases Vijayanagar plant capacity to 6 MTPA

JSW Cement’s Vijayanagar plant grows to 6 MTPA capacity, leveraging operational synergies with JSW Steel for sustainable production.

JSW Cement is successfully commissioned an additional two million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity at its Vijayanagar plant in Karnataka, bringing the total capacity to 6 MTPA. The ₹461 crore investment expands the company’s grinding capacity to 20.6 MTPA, according to a company release.

The Vijayanagar facility is conveniently placed near JSW Steel’s manufacturing plant, resulting in operational synergies across the firm. This proximity allows for more efficient sourcing of critical raw materials, such as blast furnace slag, which is essential in the production of environmentally friendly cement and cementitious products. The integration enables JSW Cement to lower its environmental effect, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability through the manufacturing of ‘Green Cement.’

Nilesh Narwekar, CEO of JSW Cement, emphasises the importance of this new capacity in Vijayanagar, adding that it is a significant step towards the company’s aim of achieving a total grinding capacity of 40.85 MTPA. He emphasises that the company’s utilisation of innovative technology, together with operational synergies with JSW Steel, enables the development of eco-friendly products that meet rising customer demand while reducing environmental impact.

The Vijayanagar plant expansion is part of a larger strategy that includes investments in brownfield and greenfield projects throughout northern and central India. JSW Cement has proposed new units in major states including Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. These efforts are intended to increase the company’s presence throughout India and address the growing demand for sustainable building materials.

JSW Cement’s growth strategy is also in line with the synergies provided by JSW Infrastructure’s port operations, which enable efficient logistics and raw material sourcing. Furthermore, the company has access to significant limestone reserves in various regions, which will provide the resources needed to sustain its future expansion.

Narwekar emphasised that the company’s approach supports its expansion plans, and helps to lessen the environmental effect of its operations by maximising resource utilisation. JSW Cement’s steady growth and dedication to sustainability reflect the company’s goal on delivering high-quality, environmentally friendly construction products.
