JSW Steel advances a green future with Maharashtra steel plant

JSW Steel reinforces its green commitment with a Maharashtra plant, investing ₹50,000–60,000 crore to drive sustainable, low-carbon steel production.
JSW Steel is reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and low-carbon growth by investing a gigantic ₹50,000 to ₹60,000 crore in Maharashtra to build a state-of-the-art green steel plant. The plant, planned for Pen in Raigad district, will be built in stages and is expected to create over 30,000 jobs—direct and indirect—during the development and operational phases.
During the World Economic Forum in Davos, JSW Steel and the Maharashtra government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which led to the investment announcement. The plant will have an initial production capacity of five million tonnes per annum (MTPA), with potential for future growth. It aims to integrate advanced decarbonisation technologies, renewable energy usage, and circular economy practices, making it one of the country’s greenest steel facilities.
JSW Steel Chairman Sajjan Jindal emphasised that this project is consistent with the company’s vision of producing steel with minimal environmental impact and contributing to India’s green industrial transformation. The plant will be built with a focus on hydrogen and renewable energy sources to align with global climate goals and India’s net-zero targets.
In addition to solidifying JSW Steel’s position as the industry leader in steel, this calculated action establishes Maharashtra as a major centre for the growth of green industries. The state government has provided full support in terms of land allocation and infrastructure facilitation to ensure that the project can be completed quickly.
