Kochi Metro gets Cabinet’s Nod [August 2012]
To improve the public transport system of Kochi, the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal Kochi Metro rail project. The ambitious project is expected to cost Rs. 5181.79 crore covering total length of 25.612 kms and consisting of 23 stations. It will be fully elevated and will run from Alwaye to Petta on standard gauge.
As per the cabinet’s decision, the project will be implemented with centre-state partnership on the model of Chennai Metro. In the total project cost, the Central Government will be spending Rs. 1002.23 crore whereas the Kerala Government will contribute Rs. 1772.23 crore. External Debt will be Rs. 2170 crore and State taxes including escalation to be borne by the State Government will be Rs. 237.33 crore.
The project will be executed by Special Purpose Vehicle of Central and State Government having 50:50 equity each. The project is scheduled to be completed in four years from the date of start of the work.
