NHAI develops 75 tunnel projects in India

NHAI is constructing 75 tunnels to demonstrate India’s commitment to enhancing logistics, maintaining safety, and promoting economic growth through modern infrastructure.

India’s road infrastructure is undergoing major alteration, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) currently constructing around 75 tunnel projects. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari recently announced a total investment of ₹49,000 crore for these projects. Gadkari spoke at the World Tunnel Day 2024 Conference on Safe and Sustainable Tunnelling, emphasising the government’s commitment to provide the public with flawless travel experiences. He noted that these initiatives are critical to increasing connection across the country and contributing to India’s goal of becoming the world’s third-largest economy.

The minister says that NHAI has now completed over 34 tunnel projects totalling 49 kilometres, with an aggregate investment of ₹20,000 crore. The current 75 projects under construction cover a distance of 146 kilometres. An additional 78 tunnel projects are in the queue, covering 285 km at a planned cost of ₹1.10 lakh crore. Gadkari emphasises that these projects are meant to meet worldwide standards for safety, efficiency, and sustainability. “Our Prime Minister has a vision to develop India’s infrastructure to world-class standards, which is essential for achieving our economic goals,” he told journalists.

The minister also emphasises the potential of India’s tunnelling sector, which has grown in importance in places that require improved connection, such as steep terrains and rural areas. Advanced tunnelling technology and sustainable practices are being prioritised in order to reduce environmental impact while maintaining long-term durability and efficiency. These tunnel projects are intended to benefit citizens significantly by lowering travel time, boosting safety, and increasing connectivity across states and regions. For example, carefully located tunnels in mountainous places will alleviate the problems provided by extreme weather, allowing for uninterrupted transport and trade.

As India pursues these massive infrastructure projects, the government’s priority continues to promote economic growth, improve logistics, and ensure environmental sustainability. These projects would improve individuals’ quality of life while also positioning India as a global leader in infrastructure development. With a robust pipeline of projects and a dedication to excellence, India’s tunnelling sector is poised to play a critical part in the country’s transition to a worldwide economic powerhouse.
