Nitin Gadkari announces mega road and tunnel projects for Assam

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced substantial infrastructure projects in Assam, including an underwater tunnel, highways, and elevated corridors to improve regional connectivity.

During the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit, Gadkari detailed projects worth ₹55,000 crore. The Ministry of Defence has sanctioned a ₹15,000 crore 12.5-km underwater tunnel connecting Gohpur and Numaligarh. Once completed, the tunnel will cut the travel time between Numaligarh and Gohpur from six hours to just 25 minutes.

Other significant projects are the₹ 5,800-crore Guwahati Ring Road, a₹ 25,000 crore four-lane motorway connecting Guwahati to Panchgram via Barapani, and the₹ 6,000-crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor. A new ₹3,225 crore road will connect Jagiroad and Bhutan via Bhairabkunda, while the Kamakhya Ropeway Project attempts to improve access to the famed pilgrimage spot.

Gadkari emphasised the importance of these projects for Assam’s connectivity and economic growth, noting that construction work on national highways costing ₹80,000 crore will commence soon. He also cited a ₹3,250 crore Morigaon-Dalgaon route, which includes a 9.41-kilometre bridge across the Brahmaputra, cutting travel distance by 140 km.

According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam’s capital investments are estimated to reach ₹25,000 crores this year, with a 10 percent annual growth rate. He highlighted the state’s determination to improve infrastructure and connectivity under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The occasion was attended by major parties such as Singapore’s High Commissioner and officials from the Inland Waterways Authority and North East Frontier Railway.
