Orange Gate Tunnel is set to transform Mumbai’s urban connectivity

The Orange Gate Tunnel project will provide a 9.2-kilometer corridor for east-west connectivity in South Mumbai, reducing congestion and enhancing traffic flow.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has acquired a ₹ 7,326 crore credit from Union Bank of India for the much-anticipated Orange Gate to Marine Drive subterranean tunnel project. This major infrastructure project seeks to transform urban mobility by considerably enhancing east-west connections in South Mumbai.
The Orange Gate Tunnel will include a 9.2-kilometre road corridor, including a 6.52-kilometre dual-tunnel system with a designated emergency lane. This tunnel, Mumbai’s first urban subterranean road, would run beneath vital public transport links such as trains, metro lines and significant city roadways. Designed to relieve congestion and simplify traffic flow, it will smoothly interact with the Eastern Freeway, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), Coastal Road, and Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
MMRDA Commissioner, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, formally signed the financing deal with Union Bank of India, ensuring the project’s timely implementation. According to MMRDA authorities, this financial support will accelerate construction work, improve connectivity, and reduce travel time for Mumbaikars.
The tunnel will be built about 40 meters below ground level, creating an uninterrupted traffic channel between Orange Gate (Eastern Freeway) and Marine Drive. As an expansion of the Eastern Freeway, the project attempts to address long-standing traffic congestion issues around Orange Gate, Mumbai Port Trust, and Main Post Office Square on PD Mello Marg.
The Orange Gate Tunnel, which connects the city’s eastern and western corridors via an underground conduit, is poised to change South Mumbai’s traffic landscape. Providing a faster, more efficient, and sustainable transportation alternative for both daily commuting and freight movement.
With financing secured and planning underway, MMRDA is prepared to begin work on this major project, which will represent a big stride forward in Mumbai’s infrastructure development. The completion of the Orange Gate Tunnel is projected to boost economic growth, reduce traffic congestion, and improve connectivity throughout the metropolitan area.
