PM Modi dedicates Sonamarg Tunnel to the nation
J&K’s newly inaugurated Sonamarg tunnel is expected to provide all-weather connectivity and enhance tourism in the region.
The 12-km Sonamarg Tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir, constructed at a cost of over ₹2,700 crore, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. The tunnel, which comprises the 6.4-km main tunnel, an egress tunnel, and approach roads, and situated at an altitude of 8,650 feet above sea level, is expected to provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg enroute to Leh.
The tunnel is expected to offer safer and continuous access to the strategically located Ladakh region. Apart from offering uninterrupted access, the development is also said to boost tourism, drive economic growth, and improve the livelihood of local people. The tunnel, along with the Zojila Tunnel, currently under construction, is aimed to reduce the distance and enable vehicular speeds of up to 70 km/hr.
Speaking at the event, PM Modi opined, “Despite the challenges, our resolve did not waver. This tunnel will significantly ease the lives of people in Sonamarg, Kargil, and Leh. The tunnel will reduce the difficulties faced during avalanches, heavy snowfall and landslides, which often led to road closures.” He also remarked that, “The government is working with the spirit of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ and over the past 10 years, more than 4 crore poor families across the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, have received permanent houses.” Highlighting the various other plans in terms of development and infrastructure that the government has planned for the region, PM Modi emphasised how they will benefit the region and the population. He also condoled the demise of the labourers whose lives were lost during the construction of the tunnel.
