Powergrid Awards Rs. 36.61 Cr. OPGW Contracts to BGR

The Electrical Projects Division (EPD) of BGR Systems Limited has been awarded turnkey contracts by Powergrid Corporation of India for installing optic fibre ground wire (OPGW) based communication backbone.

This new communications solution would replace the ULDC microwave links on its existing power transmission structures in Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. The orders, to be completed in 18 months, are put at Rs. 36.61 crore.

Elaborating on the significance of the successful bid, V. Balakrishnan, President & CEO of EPD said, “We are emerging as a leader in providing total communications solutions on power lines segment in India. Including this order for 1,575 kms, the OPGW length installed by BGR on a turnkey basis would have crossed 8,000 kms, one of the biggest undertakings by any company anywhere in the world. A challenging aspect of this order is that the scope will have to be completely executed under live-line conditions”.

The Powergrid tendering process, conducted on the global competitive bidding platform, had participation from well known companies like Larsen & Toubro and LS Cables, Korea as well.
