Tripura builds first seismic-safe government high-rise

Tripura begins construction of its first 14-storey government building with advanced earthquake-resistant features to ensure safety and efficiency in administration.

Tripura plans to transform its administrative infrastructure with the construction of a 14-storey high-rise complex in Gurkhabasti, Agartala. The state’s first government high-rise, costing ₹133.89 crore, will feature advanced earthquake-resistant technology.

The structure is strategically located in Seismic Zone 5, one of the most earthquake-prone areas, and features cutting-edge pendulum-based base isolators. These isolators, developed with technical assistance from IIT Mumbai and tested in the United States, are built to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 8.8. This is the first building in Northeast India with such seismic safety features.

The complex aims to consolidate multiple government departments under one roof, streamlining operations and improving service delivery. Sustainability is also a key focus. The building will have a solar power system and energy-efficient electrical installations. It has already received a four-star green building safety rating, demonstrating its environmentally friendly design.

While environmental and pollution control clearances initially stalled the project, construction began in July 2023. Work is moving forward steadily, and the facility is expected to be operational by December 2026. This ambitious project marks a watershed moment in Tripura’s journey towards resilient and sustainable urban development.
