Vedanta Aluminium wins awards at CII National Energy Efficiency Circle Competition 2024

At CII 2024, Vedanta Aluminium’s Lanjigarh plant receives top honours for creative, energy-efficient solutions that move the company closer to Net Zero emissions.

As the biggest producer of aluminium in India, Vedanta Aluminium receives multiple awards at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) National Energy Efficiency Circle Competition 2024 for the energy-efficient techniques employing at its alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha. The unit has won first place in the area of “Best Energy Efficient Designated Consumer (under BEE-PAT scheme)” and is being given special recognition in the categories of “Best Managed Electrical System for Energy Efficiency” and “Best Energy Efficient Organisation (Large Sector).” These honours recognise Vedanta Aluminium’s astute attention to maintaining ethical business practises.

High-grade alumina is generated at Vedanta Aluminium’s state-of-the-art refinery and then processed into aluminium at its smelters in Jharsuguda, Odisha, and Korba, Chhattisgarh. At the plant, more than 29 energy-efficiency projects are presently underway with the goal of supporting Vedanta’s 2050 aim to achieve Net Zero emissions.

Enhancing its power distribution system for energy savings, improving its “digestion” process (bauxite is mixed with caustic soda), and using biomass briquettes as a renewable fuel source for power generation are among the projects that won Vedanta Lanjigarh top accolades. These initiatives have decreases energy usage and greatly improves the plant’s operational efficiency. Vedanta Lanjigarh’s initiatives saves more than 69,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in FY 2024 alone.

“At Vedanta Aluminium, we seek to establish new benchmarks in operational excellence based on sustainable business practises,” says John Slaven, CEO, in response to the honour. We are appreciative that CII recognised our work in this context. These honours are a heartening testament to our unwavering dedication to reaching our Net Zero goals and raising the bar for ethical business practices.

With the goal to improve energy efficiency throughout its operations, Vedanta Lanjigarh is carrying out a number of other projects. These includes  Anti-friction coating in water cooling pumps, which decreases annual electrical energy consumption to 469 MWh and annual greenhouse gas savings of 355 tonnes. Enhancements to ball mills that grind bauxite to a uniform size. Their capacity utilisation significantly improves as a result of the renovations, resulting in an annual reduction in electrical energy consumption to 2,400 MWh and 1,702 tonnes CO2 in GHG savings. The electrical distribution and maintenance system of the plant is fully digitalised, allowing for enhanced energy reading monitoring and reporting to lower errors.

The goal of the CII National Energy Efficiency Circle Competition is to showcase industry-wide best practices for energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy sources, and climate change mitigation. This year, more than 500 organisations from across the country entered the competition with the topic “Powering the Net Zero Goals.” The competitions also honour industry initiatives that fall under the purview of the Indian government’s BEE-PAT program, a regulatory tool for energy-intensive enterprises to reduce their energy use. It is overseen by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, a government agency that helps with the creation of plans and regulations to control energy use.

Operating under Vedanta Limited, Vedanta Aluminium is the primary producer of aluminium in India, accounting for over half of the country’s total production in FY24 with 2.37 million tonnes. It is a pioneer in the production of aluminium products with added value that are essential to key sectors. Due to its cutting-edge sustainable development strategies, Vedanta Aluminium is ranked #1 in the world for the aluminium industry in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023. With its top-notch aluminium smelters, alumina refinery, and power plants in India, the company achieves its goal of promoting aluminum’s growing uses as the “Metal of the Future” for a future that is greener.
