Walajapet-Ranipet highway project to improve Tamil Nadu connectivity
Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport, recently revealed a ₹1,338 crore highway project connecting Tamil Nadu to Andhra Pradesh.
Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, recently announced a significant development in Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure. The government has approved an INR 1,338 crore project for an access-controlled highway on NH-40. This highway would be 28 kilometres long, linking Walajapet/Ranipet to the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border. The effort aims to increase regional connections, allowing for more convenient travel and enhancing regional economic activity.
The proposed highway will have a four-lane main roadway with paved shoulders and two-lane service roads on both sides. This well-planned design will improve traffic flow for both long-distance and local commuters.
An important component of the project is the construction of a 10-kilometre bypass around Walajapet and Ranipet to relieve traffic congestion in these areas. The project will also improve transport safety by constructing four major bridges and two railway overbridges.
The new access-controlled corridor is projected to greatly increase communication between Chennai and other major cities, including Bengaluru, Tirupati, and Vellore. Vellore, home to the renowned Christian Medical College (CMC), stands to benefit immensely from this motorway, which will make it easier for patients, tourists, and medical personnel to reach the hospital. This improved connectivity will also make the region more accessible for trade, tourism, and other activities, hence improving the economy.
The highway’s effect on local industries will likewise be significant. Walajapet and Ranipet are well-known for their thriving leather industry and small-scale engineering firms that supply critical components to major companies such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). This highway’s improved road infrastructure will stimulate new investments and support expansion in these sectors, driving economic development in the area.
The presence of two-lane service roads is a crucial aspect of the project since it ensures smooth traffic flow for local commuters while preserving efficiency for long-distance travellers. This dual approach effectively meets both regional and local transport needs. As a result, the₹ 1,338 crore highway project is expected to deliver long-term advantages to Tamil Nadu by boosting local industry and sustaining critical infrastructure.
