CII-IGBC hosts Mumbai Summit on climate resilience

CII-IGBC organises Mumbai Green Summit, addressing climate challenges, green building, and sustainable urban development for coastal cities.

The primary body for green building certification and related services in India, CII-IGBC, convened a one-day Mumbai Green Summit with an emphasis on important topics and difficulties connected to climate change and global warming that can affect coastal cities like Mumbai. Principal Secretary Pravin Darade of the Department of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change and Executive Chairman Pasha Patel of the Chief Minister’s Environmental Task Force both attended the conference.

During the first meeting, Patel talks about the threats posed by global warming and climate change, emphasising the necessity for Mumbai to confront this grave issue by determining prompt and appropriate steps to lessen the effects. In addition to highlighting the application of the “green steel” concept in building construction, he also set the tone by concentrating on the cultivation of bamboo as a means of addressing the problems.

Darade states that Mumbai residents take public transport on a daily basis and expressed hope that, when the metro network is finished, it will significantly lessen the city’s carbon impact. In order to protect the environment, he too advocated for the widespread usage of bamboo plants.

Vishal Kamat, the CII Maharashtra State Council Chairman, expresses in his special presentation, “CII aims to position itself as a catalyst in shaping Mumbai’s climate-resilient future. The first edition of the summit marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between industry, government, and civil society to address Mumbai’s unique environmental challenges. Mumbai faces increasing threats from climate change, such as rising sea levels, heatwaves, and urban flooding. CII state council with the support of IGBC chapters, will advocate for resilient infrastructure as the bedrock of sustainable urban growth. The focus will be on creating buildings and infrastructure that can withstand these climate risks.”

The “Green Dossier,” an overview of the efforts of CII IGBC, the organisation spearheading India’s green building and sustainable built environment movements, is also introduced during the summit. The implementation of green and sustainability concepts is greatly aided by CII IGBC, which has over 14,400 certified projects and a green building footprint of 12.02 billion square feet. CII IGBC and the real estate sector have approximately 3,000 projects totalling 3.53 billion square feet in Maharashtra alone, while 1,540 certified projects totalling 1.72 billion square feet are located in Mumbai.

Two technical sessions at the summit addressed the significance of real estate developers in fostering healthier living and working environments that prioritise human well-being, as well as the economic advantages of sustainability and its effects on the environment. In the other session, the techniques for achieving a low-carbon built environment were discussed. These strategies depend on the utilisation of eco-friendly products and technologies in addition to sustainable design and practices.
