Vedanta Aluminium saves 1.3 million GJ with innovative solutions

Vedanta Aluminium achieves a significant milestone by saving 1.3 million GJ of energy and lowering GHG intensity by 10.16 percent.

Vedanta Aluminium succeeded in preserving 1.3 million gigajoules (GJ) of energy by implementing various innovative strategies to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This milestone, announced during Energy Conservation Week, demonstrates Vedanta’s leadership in sustainable industrial processes and dedication to the country’s energy conservation ambitions.

In addition to energy savings, the corporation achieved a significant 10.16 percent decrease in GHG intensity from the 2021 baseline, demonstrating its commitment to combating climate change. Vedanta Aluminium has secured 1.3 GW of renewable energy as part of its energy drive, moving the company closer to more sustainable and cleaner operations.

Vedanta Aluminium’s manufacturing facilities used several creative measures to attain these results. These included installing graphitised cathode improvements in its potlines, which reduced current consumption and emissions while enhancing operational efficiency.

The introduction of indigenously built Vedanta pot controllers, which cut energy usage by 200-250 kWh per tonne of aluminium, has also played an important role in improving energy consumption.

The corporation also focused on increasing power plant efficiency by reducing individual coal usage, which contributed to its efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Furthermore, Vedanta Aluminium’s smelting processes were improved to promote energy-efficient operations throughout its numerous plants.

Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer of Vedanta Aluminium, states, “Energy management is central to our net-zero journey. Innovations like the Vedanta Lining Design and the expanded use of renewable energy are key drivers in our push for lower carbon emissions. Our top ranking in the S&P Global Sustainability Assessment for 2023 further demonstrates our commitment to aligning industrial progress with environmental responsibility.”

As part of its environmental efforts, Vedanta Aluminium is providing energy efficiency training for all of its staff. This project, combined with the company’s adherence to ISO 50001 for Energy Management, ensures that energy use is constantly optimal, contributing to the company’s overall environmental goals.
