BMRCL proposes a 197-kilometer metro expansion to ease congestion

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is carrying out a feasibility study for a 197-kilometre metro expansion to improve Bengaluru’s connectivity and transportation infrastructure.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is conducting a detailed feasibility assessment to extend its metro network by an additional 197 km. This would supplement the 255 km already planned for construction, greatly expanding the network beyond its existing operational length of 76.95 km.
According to reports, the research is looking at eight important sections, including the extension of the Airport Line to Devanahalli, which was announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in his previous budget. The ongoing investigation includes routes from Challaghatta to Bidadi (15 km), Silk Institute to Harohalli (24 km), and a 68-kilometre corridor from Kalena Agrahara to Kadugodi Tree Park via Bannerghatta National Park, Jigani, Anekal, Attibele, Sarjapur, and Varthur. Other lines being considered include Bommasandra to Atibele (11 km) and Madavara to Tumakuru (52.41 km).
Three further portions, totalling 27 km, were recently added: Kadabgere to Tavarekere (6 km), Chikkajala to Devanahalli (6 km), and K R Pura to Hoskote (15 km). According to a top BMRCL official, the feasibility study will be completed by July 2025 and submitted to the state government. “The government will decide on the final routes, likely selecting about 50 percent of the proposed 197 km, which could increase the metro network to approximately 350 km,” the official said.
The research is as extensive as an extensive Project Report (DPR), including traffic analysis, station planning, cost estimation, and sustainability, with the geotechnical survey remaining. Once the study is completed, finalising the DPR will need no extra effort.
Meanwhile, BMRCL plans to launch the Yellow Line (R V Road to Bommasandra, 19.15 km) within the next two to three months. The Pink Line (Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara) and Blue Line (Silk Board to K R Pura and K R Pura to KIA) are slated to be completed by 2026.
Phase 3 of the metro expansion, which includes two corridors—Kempapura to JP Nagar IV Phase (32.15 km) and Kadabgere to Hosahalli via Magadi Road (12.5 km), is receiving approval from both the state and central governments, with land purchase beginning. However, Phase 3A (Sarjapur-Hebbal, 36.59 km) is currently seeking central sanction.
This ambitious development plan intends to improve connectivity throughout Bengaluru, reduce traffic congestion, and improve public transit infrastructure in the rapidly growing metropolis.
