Duravit India’s production site completes 10 years in Gujarat

India is developing into an important sanitary ware market in the AsiaPacific region. Duravit recognized the high potential early on and opened a ceramic production facility in the state of Gujarat 10 years ago.

As a German design bathroom manufacturer, Duravit benefits from the strong demand for design and lifestyle brands in India. The country is undergoing a tremendous transformation in terms of bathrooms: from the most functional room to a modern area of wellbeing with a focus on timeless design, characterised by comfortable, holistic concepts based on individual needs.

Ideal conditions for Duravit: The company signed a letter of intent in vibrant Gujarat in 2007 and the facility was inaugurated in September 2010 by the visionary Prime Minister Narendra Modi while serving as Chief Minister of Gujarat.

The plant in India is the Duravit Group’s tenth production site worldwide and covers an area of around 170,000 m². Duravit has been active in India via wholesalers since 2001, before opening a subsidiary, and has thus acquired the status of a recognized export company.

Certified as an AEO (Authorized Economic Operator) the organization also has the ISO 9001 certification, ISO 14001, ISO 50001 certification and ISI mark. Rewarded with several awards in the last two years, including Shop Floor of the Year and Green Manufacturing from The Times of India Group‘s publication, the Indian plant is one of the most modern and state-of-the-art factories. Duravit India employs a total of 350 people and opened its showroom at the production site in July 2014.

When Duravit chose the state of Gujarat as the location for the production plant, the company was one of the first investors in the region. “For Duravit, quality is a key success factor to ensure the satisfaction of business partners, architects and consumers. In the beginning, we developed the infrastructure and trained the employees to meet Duravit’s high quality standards,” says Asutosh Shah, Managing Director of Duravit India. These worldwide uniform quality standards of the company are already established at the production site Duravit India and were certified by the German TÜV Rheinland with the quality standard EN ISO 9001 in December 2013. “We are particularly proud to have contributed to the establishment of design and quality in the bathroom in India,” says Stephan Tahy, CEO of Duravit.

The main business comprises of the project business as well as from the private sector. The company has already made an impact in India as a premium designer bathroom brand with a presence in more than 75 luxury hotels and over 150 premium residential apartments. Having achieved a nationwide acceptance, the brand is present across 400 retailer showrooms in India. Moreover, Duravit India has deployed an after-sales service team across most parts of the country. Success lately proves the company right: Duravit has already become one of the best-known designer brands and serves almost all well-known developers of India.

In 2019, the design bathroom manufacturer was able to continue the growth trend of previous years with new record figures for revenue, operating result and net income. Despite the low level of global economic growth, the group’s total sales increased by 4.8 per cent (€486.8 million) at the end of the year. The company can thus successfully position itself with more than 6,100 employees worldwide. In 2021, the production capacity will be doubled.
