Energy-efficient, sustainable, human-centric lighting solutions
This interaction features Wipro Lighting’s innovative lighting solutions and also sheds light on the company’s sustainable products.
Could you walk us through the lighting solutions offered by your company?
We have been offering lighting solutions for the last 32 years. Office lighting and industrial lighting are our forte. We are known for our lighting solutions for collaborative spaces and workstations. We also provide lighting solutions for infrastructure projects like metros and airports.
What does your company offer for energy efficiency?
We were the first lighting player in India to launch the electronic ballast, which has substantially lesser energy consumption, almost 80 percent compared to the electromagnetic ballast. In 2002, we were the first to introduce occupancy and daylight sensors in the Indian market. Using these sensors helps to reduce energy consumption by almost 30 to 35 per cent. We could utilise natural light and control the light in both the office and factory environment. We have also enhanced this offering by introducing several lighting management systems. In 2010, for example, the office space’s light power density (LPD) was around 0.8 to 0.9 Watts per square foot. Today, this LPD has been brought down to 0.3 Watts per square foot through our lighting management systems.
How do you ensure sustainability through your products?
One of the major challenges that India is facing today is electronic waste. To efficiently reduce this waste, we have started designing our products to have a very high product life. This will avoid frequent failures and reduce the frequency of disposal of such electronic components. We recently launched an acoustic solution integrated with the lighting solution. Our new product is made of acoustic PET material manufactured from recycled PET water bottles, which are otherwise difficult to decompose and are a source of soil and water pollution.

Lighting application has a direct or indirect impact on indoor occupant comfort. Light pollution during nighttime is one of the major issues with outdoor lighting. This pollution has severely impacted the migration of birds and, eventually, the ecological balance. To mitigate the issue, we have recently launched a Dark Sky-certified product. It does not throw light upward during the nighttime and only directs light downward. This way, we will be able to minimise the light pollution caused by outdoor light. This will help not only the customers in terms of giving glare film lighting to their occupants but also play a major role by contributing towards an eco-friendly environment.
We have also introduced a human-centric lighting solution called InSync. This artificial light source mimics the wavelength and colour temperature of sunlight indoors, which is quite beneficial to the human body and overall occupant wellness.
