GMDA announces elevated SPR corridor development plan

In an effort to improve connectivity between Vatika Chowk, NH-8, and the Delhi–Mumbai Highway, GMDA is building a 5.5-kilometre, signal-free elevated corridor based on the Dwarka Highway to relieve traffic on Gurugram’s Southern Peripheral Road.

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) plans a 5.5-kilometre elevated corridor along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) modelled after the Dwarka Highway’s form and operation. This six-lane, signal-free route would run from Vatika Chowk to NH-8, providing a seamless connection between the Dwarka Motorway and the Delhi-Mumbai Motorway via the Sohna highway (NH-248A). The corridor will include a mix of elevated and at-grade lanes, cloverleaf interchanges, and on/off ramps to ensure smooth traffic flow, eliminating bottlenecks and congestion currently plaguing this length.

The project’s anticipated cost is ₹750 crore, which includes ₹620 crore for construction and ₹130 crore for site purchase. The GMDA has invited bids for draughting a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the corridor. Additionally, road-strengthening work along the SPR for ₹9.65 million is planned. This programme is in response to Gurugram’s increasing traffic flow, particularly during peak hours, and is part of a larger strategy to develop long-term infrastructure solutions rather than depending on interim remedies.

To supplement this work, GMDA has resolved land acquisition issues for two additional SPR linkages, one 350 metres long between Sectors 71 and 73 and the other 170 metres long between Sectors 62 and 65. These tiny connecting roads are expected to improve local sector-to-sector circulation and integrate better into the bigger corridor. To avoid future delays, the GMDA is conducting anti-encroachment drives along the SPR and Dwarka-Manesar corridors.

Furthermore, the authority, in collaboration with Gurgaon Metro Rail Limited (GMRL), is relocating high-tension power towers near the Millennium City Centre metro station to make way for a 350-metre metro turnaround track. These extensive infrastructure upgrades illustrate GMDA’s ambition of constructing a well-integrated, signal-free transit network that will support Gurugram’s rapid urban growth while alleviating commute issues.
