Himachal Pradesh to enhance rural connectivity with new projects

The central government has approved ₹3,345.81 crore under PMGSY-III for Himachal Pradesh to build 3,123 km of rural roads and 43 bridges, improving access to remote regions.
Himachal Pradesh has received a significant financial boost to improve rural connectivity through the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana Phase III (PMGSY-III). The state has secured a significant sanction of ₹3,345.81 crore to develop 3,123 kilometres of rural roads and 43 bridges. This significant investment aims to improve access and connectivity in remote areas, boosting local economies and reducing isolation in rural communities.
Vikramaditya Singh, the Public Works Minister, announced that the funding will significantly improve the state’s rural infrastructure. The primary goal is to connect even the most remote areas of Himachal Pradesh with reliable road networks and bridges. The government intends to improve transport and increase access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and markets.
Singh stated that the state government had already spent ₹905 crore under PMGSY during the fiscal year 2024–2025, exceeding the ₹650 crore initial allocation. The efficient use of funds demonstrates the state’s commitment to prioritising rural infrastructure development. The state government has requested a double allocation of ₹1,300 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26 due to its proactive approach.
Looking beyond PMGSY-III, the state government is preparing for the next phase, PMGSY-IV. As part of the preliminary work, the Public Works Department has already mapped 1,560 habitations. According to the Ministry of Rural Development, 1,115 are eligible for the next phase of development. This strategic approach aims to build on the current phase’s achievements while expanding the rural road network.
Furthermore, following discussions with the National Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (NRIDA), the government is reconsidering 247 previously rejected habitations, which could pave the way for the creation of approximately 250 Detailed Project Reports (DPRs). These DPRs will cover approximately 1,400 kilometres, demonstrating the state’s commitment to leaving no area behind in its quest for improved connectivity.
The new road and bridge projects will directly benefit many rural communities, improving socioeconomic conditions. Improved connectivity will make daily commuting easier while also improving access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. Furthermore, improved infrastructure is expected to attract investment, boost tourism, and provide job opportunities for locals.
By improving its rural infrastructure, Himachal Pradesh is making significant progress towards inclusive development, ensuring that every corner of the state is accessible and economically viable. The allocation of funds under PMGSY-III demonstrates the government’s continued commitment to empowering rural communities through sustainable infrastructure initiatives.
