How thoughtful renovation improves community and culture in Medellin

Every decision, from layout to materials, is motivated by a deep respect for both innovation and history and an unwavering commitment to excellence. This renovation embodies the essence of thoughtful design. Our work honours and strengthens the community’s identity while celebrating Medellin’s past.

A home’s renovation is an opportunity to give it new life, develop its character, and create a setting that suits its occupants’ goals and way of life. This idea is best illustrated by our most recent refurbishment project in Medellín’s elite Las Palmas neighbourhood, which combines contemporary style with classic charm to produce a genuinely one-of-a-kind living environment.

The Las Palmas house makeover was an experiment in fusing modern architecture with Medellín’s lush settings. The area’s rich cultural legacy and verdant surroundings made it the ideal setting for a makeover that honours the built and natural settings. We started by choosing regional materials and textures that celebrate the area’s architectural history while introducing contemporary design features to guarantee practicality and visual appeal. More than just a matter of taste, the meticulous selection of materials was a deliberate effort to support regional producers and craftspeople, boost the local economy, and promote a feeling of community.

The living area underwent a major makeover, removing a central column, opening up the area and establishing a continuous flow between the dining area, living room, and kitchen. This open-concept design makes the house feel more hospitable and inclusive by encouraging interaction between family members and guests and improving visual connectivity.

We ensured that the open-concept design enhanced the visual appeal without compromising the house’s structural integrity by strengthening the metal structure. A living area that feels roomy and safe requires careful balancing between openness and stability.

One of the renovation’s main components was refinishing the wood floors throughout the house. Despite years of wear and tear, we restored the existing wood flooring to its former splendour instead of replacing it. This choice gave each room a touch of refinement and cosiness while maintaining the house’s original charm. The restored flooring’s rich tones and organic beauty seamlessly blend in with the contemporary design features, creating a cohesive flow between the many areas in the house.

As soon as one walks into the living area, they are drawn to the freshly installed gas fireplace, which acts as a focal point and a source of warmth and comfort, as well as the fantastic views of Medellín’s beautiful surroundings. This welcoming area is ideal for hosting visitors or unwinding with family, offering a tasteful fusion of elegance and cosiness. The room’s natural elements and the contemporary fireplace design create a refined yet cosy atmosphere. The living room’s enormous windows let in abundant natural light and frame the breathtaking vistas outside, adding to the room’s air of openness and connectedness to the natural world.

Working with a gifted local artist, Bryan Sanchez, we added a one-of-a-kind and personalised touch to the refurbishment by creating a custom mural in the dining area. Bryan captured the exquisite image of a severely endangered jaguar, an animal of great cultural and ecological significance in the area. The mural of the jaguar improves the dining area’s aesthetic appeal and establishes a significant link between the house and Medellín’s larger environmental surroundings.

Apart from the cosmetic enhancements, we tackled other enduring plumbing problems. By taking on these plumbing repairs head-on, we ensured the house would last the test of time and run flawlessly. Our priorities were upgrading the water flow, replacing ageing pipes, and repairing leaks that had caused damage.
