L&T secures solar projects in Bihar

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won a major contract in Bihar to build a grid-connected solar facility with a battery energy storage system worth between ₹1,000 crore and ₹ 2,500 crore.

The contract value falls between ₹ 1,000 crore and ₹ 2,500 crore, based on L&T’s classification. The project will be managed by L&T’s Power Transmission and Distribution (PT&D) vertical, according to a filing the company made with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).  The solar project, which is a key part of Bihar’s plan to use renewable energy for sustainable development and climate change mitigation, will be situated in Kajra village, Lakhisarai district. With a 254 MWh capacity, the BESS will store solar energy during times of low demand and discharge it during periods of high demand. Additionally, this system will assist in maintaining voltage stability, frequency regulation, and power generation fluctuations management. The BESS also has black start capabilities, which enable the grid to be quickly re-energised after outages.

The project’s importance was emphasised by A. Ravindran, Senior Vice President & Head of PT&D’s Renewable Strategic Business Group, who noted that it significantly expands the company’s Renewable EPC portfolio. L&T has managed approximately 1.5 GWh of storage capacity for battery energy storage systems and has a cumulative capacity of 18 GWp from its completed and ongoing solar and wind projects. Because of its experience, L&T is regarded by developers worldwide as their go-to EPC partner.

Whole-time Director and Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) T. Madhava Das of L&T highlights the company’s competence in providing renewable energy solutions utilising a range of technologies. These include distributed and large-scale energy storage technologies, effective transmission and distribution networks, digital energy solutions, and solar power that is grounded and floating. Das mentioned that L&T has successfully completed gigawatt-scale projects in the Far East, the Middle East, and India, highlighting the company’s dedication to timely project delivery, quality control, and safety.

With more than 8 decades of experience in EPC projects, hi-tech manufacturing, and services, Larsen & Toubro, a USD 27 billion international company based in India, is committed to providing high-quality solutions and guaranteeing client satisfaction. Another significant step forward in L&T’s endeavours to develop renewable energy infrastructure in India and beyond is this new project in Bihar.
