Southern Regional Conference 2024 to explore architecture’s future
IIA Kerala hosts the Southern Regional Conference 2024 in Wayanad, focusing on architecture’s connection to humanity, society, and innovation.
The Southern Regional Conference (SRC) 2024, hosted by the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) Kerala Chapter and organised by the IIA Kannur Centre, will be held on November 29-30, 2024, at the Vythiri Village Resort in Wayanad. This distinguished conference will bring together visionary architects from all around the country and beyond to encourage a robust debate and sharing of innovative ideas in architecture.
The Southern Regional Conference is a prime forum for professional growth, knowledge sharing, and networking in the architecture community. This year’s subject, “Bridging Binaries,” will lead debates about architecture’s deep ties to mankind, society, and technological innovation.
The conference will focus on two key themes: “Humanity and Society,” and “Humanity and Innovation.” In the first, panellists will discuss architects’ critical role in establishing cultural norms and lifestyle patterns, focussing on how the built environment influences daily life, behaviours, and social interactions. Resilient architecture will be a key theme, as famous architects express their dedication to designing spaces that inspire, connect, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
The second theme, Humanity and Innovation, will investigate how technological breakthroughs such as immersive technology and 3D printing are changing architectural methods. Experts will discuss how these inventions bridge the gap between idea and reality, pushing the boundaries of design. The sessions will provide significant insights into contemporary tools and strategies that facilitate experimental, dynamic architecture.
In addition to fascinating speakers and debates, the event will provide a variety of stimulating opportunities. Attendees may expect exhibitions showing cutting-edge building materials, as well as guided nature hikes and bird-watching activities to enjoy Wayanad’s natural beauty and rich bird population. There will also be a lively display of local arts and crafts, honouring regional creativity.
On-site activities and interactive games will keep everyone entertained and engaged, supplementing the more formal lectures with easy and pleasurable experiences. Attendees can also enjoy lively cultural programs that highlight local traditions, adding to the event’s appreciation of architecture and regional heritage.
The conference will feature an exceptional lineup of national and international speakers, including the 2016 Pritzker Prize recipient, Ar. Alejandro Aravena. These sessions will be targeted to address the complexities and design issues in ecologically sensitive areas, drawing on the recent Wayanad incident to provide real-world context.
Attendees will also get the opportunity to participate in a design contest and visit exhibitions displaying the most recent architectural trends. The event seeks to promote responsible architectural and technical developments while encouraging collaboration and innovation. Each day of the conference will end with a gala supper and colourful cultural programs, creating a casual environment in which architects and participants can interact, unwind, and network informally.
“We are excited to host the Southern Regional Conference 2024 in the beautiful surroundings of Wayanad. This year’s theme, ‘Bridging Binaries,’ reflects our commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue between humanity, society, and innovation. As architects, we have a profound responsibility to create spaces that inspire and connect, and this conference will be a vital platform for sharing ideas and exploring the future of our profession. Together, we can pave the way for a sustainable and inclusive built environment,” says Ar. Vinod Cyriac, Chairperson, IIA Kerala Chapter.
