L&T initiates construction on Victoria metro station, Kolkata

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has officially begun construction on Victoria Memorial Station, part of the 15.215 km Kolkata Metro Line-3 (Purple Line)’s 5.05 km underground package UG1 between Mominpur and Esplanade.

In September 2023, L&T’s staff began barricading works to facilitate Victoria Memorial Station site preparatory activities. Recently, they deployed a trench cutter machine to begin grabbing and trenching operations to construct the diaphragm wall (D-wall) for its 325-metre-long station box, which is being erected at the location of Maidan’s former fountain.

Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) awarded L&T the ₹ 2447 crore civil construction contract for 5.05 km Package UG1 after declaring it the lowest bidder in June 2023.

This northern and final part of Line-3 (15.215 km) (Joka to Esplanade / BBD Bagh) will be made up of twin tunnels that will connect four subterranean stations: Kidderpore, Victoria Memorial, Park Street, and Esplanade. It will provide the city’s first three-line interchange at Esplanade, connecting the Blue Line (Dakshineswar – Kavi Subhash) with the 16.34-kilometre Green Line (Howrah Maidan-Sector V). Out of 5.05 km (chainage 9063.00m to 14113.00m), approximately 500 metres on the line’s northern terminus between Esplanade and Park Street will be constructed utilising the cut and cover method.
